Women Journalists

Online harassment is endemic to journalism, especially for woman or minorities. Censorship in the age of information warfare increasingly means targeting journalists who attempt to report on sensitive topics and drowning out legitimate journalism. Raising awareness in newsrooms, international organizations including the UN, OSCE, and OECD, and the public is the first step towards improving conditions.

Policy

Examining the geopolitics of disinformation and online harassment, from researching and writing about how young women helped shape and lead the “Arab Spring” uprisings to assessing the gender dynamics of media development and free expression trends for UNESCO. Shaping the freedom of expression and journalist safety agendas.

Advocacy

Advising tech platforms like Google (as well as YouTube and Jigsaw), Facebook, Twitter on product design, policies, terms of services and content moderation. Testifying before Congress, providing input to UN, OSCE, and OECD consultations, using expertise and access to raise awareness and bring about change. Founding member of the Coalition Against Online Violence.

Research

Developing research agendas and publications that provide the foundation for meaningful policy responses. Helping to establish the field of online harassment studies and analyzing its overwhelming impact on women and marginalized identities, as well as its foreign policy implications. Current research focuses on the geopolitics of disinformation operations targeting women reporting on disinformation, and explores policy and technological solutions at the national and international levels.
